Canada Day Celebration

Celebrate Canada With us July 1st!

Canada, Oh, Canada! How we love you so! Join us as we celebrate Canada Day at Put-in-Bay. We hope you like cake because we are ready to party. Come to South Bass Island on Canada Day weekend and explore the partnership with Canada and the United States. Make sure to visit Perry’s Victory Visitor Center during your trip and pay your respects to those that fought against each other in the War of 1812. This is the only national monument designated as a reminder to international peace and unity.

Canada Day is the national holiday for Canadians. This day celebrates and honors the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the Constitution Act, 1867 (then called the British North America Act, 1867). This Constitutional Act united three colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick into one single Dominion within the British Empire. Originally referred to as Dominion Day, the holiday was renamed in 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed. Not only do domestic Canadians celebrate this holiday, it is also honored in various locations around the world by Canadians living abroad.

Celebrating Canada Day at Put-in-Bay

Canada Day

Canada Day

There is so much rich history and connection between Canada and the Lake Erie Islands. After all, we share a unique border. While you go about celebrating Canada Day, there are many other fun things to learn about the history of the Lake Erie islands as well. Start at the Historical Museum and browse the various artifacts and pictures of the area. This historical space is supported by donations and you can help keep the history alive by purchasing something pre-loved at their resale shop. Another great place to visit is the Aquatic Visitor Center. This landmark holds incredible value to our friend’s to the north, because it was once the Lake Erie Fish Hatchery. They also research the ecosystem, species, and water conditions of Lake Erie and suggest solutions to the appropriate people to encourage ecological health in the region. Additionally, you can:

  • Learn about Lake Erie ecosystem research
  • Catch a few fish
  • Learn about invasive species
  • Explore the old hatchery
  • Use a microscope to look at some of the lake’s creatures

With so much history to retain, you will definitely want a few days to explore. Check out the Put-in-Bay lodging page and book your stay today!  Also, to get around be sure to consider a Put-In-Bay Golf Cart Rental for transport!
