A Little History About Put in Bay Heineman Winery
Founded in 1888 by Gustav Heineman, a German immigrant from the wine region of Baden, Heineman Winery has grown into a beloved destination on Put-in-Bay. Thanks to the tempering effect of Lake Erie, the island enjoys a longer growing season and ideal soil conditions, creating the perfect environment for viticulture.
- By 1900, there were 16 wineries on the island, making it a thriving hub for winemaking.
- However, Prohibition led to the closure of most wineries.
- Heineman’s Winery survived thanks to Norman Heineman, Gustav’s son, who found creative ways to keep the business afloat.
- During Prohibition, Norman began selling tickets to the Crystal Cave, home to the world’s largest geode, attracting visitors and generating revenue.
- The winery also thrived by offering unfermented wine juice and later harvesting minerals for fireworks production.
Today, Heineman Winery stands as a testament to resilience and innovation, continuing its legacy as one of Put-in-Bay’s most treasured attractions.
