The Put in Bay Round House Bar
The Round House Bar is summer on Put-in-Bay all housed in one classic, iconic bar. An island institution with over 140 years of history, everyone knows when they see the red “Whiskey” light lit up, the fun is just beginning!
The Round House Bar History
- Origins as Columbia Restaurant (1873):
- Served cold treats like ice cream and cottage cheese using ice blocks harvested from Lake Erie.
- Innovative for its time, before refrigeration was available.
- 1944 – Construction of the Circular Bar:
- Built by the Greunke family with the help of the Cincinnati Brewing Company.
- Designed to host concerts “in the round,” with the stage in the center for direct audience interaction.
- Stage Relocation:
- Stage was moved to its current location for an improved setup, where performers now face the audience.
- McCann Family Ownership (1950s-present):
- The McCann family has owned the Round House Bar since the early 1950s.
- Maintained much of the original charm, with updates to the floor and front porch.
- Signature Red, White, and Blue Exterior:
- The exterior was painted by Scott LoBadio.
- Murals by Canoe Bob:
- The interior features murals by the artist Canoe Bob, adding a unique touch to the bar’s atmosphere.
