Perry’s Cave: A Historic Wonder
The main attraction at Perry’s Cave is its underground freshwater lake, located 52 feet beneath the surface. Discovered in 1813 by Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, the commander who led American forces to victory at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812, the cave played a crucial role in the war. Perry’s troops, struggling to find fresh water during the conflict, were fortunate to discover the lake.
This rare underground lake is shrouded in mystery. It rises and falls with the tides of Lake Erie, but no one knows exactly how the two bodies of water are connected. The cave’s water was also used by the infamous Victory Hotel before it burned down in 1919, further adding to the cave’s historical significance.
Butterfly House
The Butterfly House is a peaceful oasis featuring over 50 species of butterflies from around the world.
