putinbay.com is happy to welcome back Downtown Dave! A short column by Dave Schafer, owner of Ashley’s Island House and friend of the site, Downtown Dave will share this week’s live music schedule at the Bay, as well as his thoughts on what’s what at PIB!

Downtown Dave is going to make you want to come to the Bay this weekend. Here’s where we think you should stay!

Next Two Weekend’s Live Music At The Bay!

A quick note: all of the above listings might not be 100% perfect. I do my best to provide everybody with the best info on the bands every week  that I know. Sometimes I make mistakes. But just like my thoughts of the week I am not going to let somebody criticize what I try to provide every week. If they think they can do better, bring it on. LOL

2 of my favorites are playing over the next few weeks. Flamingos are an island favorite and End Rock played at my tailgate last year. Make sure that you see both bands. I call Wednesdays at the Roundhouse Wrinkle Wednesday. Why, the bands play mostly songs from the 70s,80s and 90s. Most of the crowd has a few wrinkles just like me. Roundhouse calls it Wednesday it is a tradition. They even have shirts that say that.

I have posted videos of all 3 performers playing over the next week on my site and Ashleys site. All of them will take requests. They do not have an exact play list. They tend to play what the crowd wants to hear. Now they all play Free Bird but why does everybody request it? I think it is just because everybody likes to hear somebody request Free Bird. Now it is a great song but I think there are a lot better songs to request. So get your requests ready

Sloppy Seconds are performers that spend most of the winter entertaining in Key West. They are Pete Jarvis and Larry Strickland. Ray Fogg, I have seen him play for over 20 years. He will play all of your favorite sing alongs plus a few of his originals. Definitely has many jokes and stories that are always funny. Can be sometimes R Rated so if you can not take a joke do not go. But I suggest make sure you see him perform. Hillbilly Casino is a band that I make sure I see every year. I will probably check them out on the Sunday night show.

Rest of the Island

The Brewery has Karaoke every Friday and Saturday night starting at 10:00 and right across the street from them is a piano bar. So if you don’t like any of the music on the island sing your own songs or sing your request with the piano player. Plus I found out Topsy Turvey has a Jam session every Monday night at 9:00 where many of the local musicians play.  A lot of the solo acts play for tips so please show your love for them

Downtown Dave’s Thought(s) For The Week

We had an awesome week at Put in Bay last week. It was the busiest that I have seen this year. Every place that I went into was packed. Not packed that you could not move but packed that you could feel the energy.

Time for the thought of the week. I had somebody tonight ask me if I was always so social. I had to think for a minute and I said I was in sales so I have to be social. Now I am in hospitality so I have to be social. But then I said it was Laurie. She talks to everybody. She helped me I guess not to have a filter. What I mean by that is that I am not afraid to talk to anybody. Being in sales it was difficult for me to make the first move. But when the door opened I was usually able to close the sale. For me it was just finding out about the people before I made the sale. At Ashleys I do my best to find out as much as I can about our guests. That way I can learn who they are and what makes them happy. It was my job as a salesperson and manager to learn before I tried to either lead my team or close the sale. But that brings me to this weeks topic. THE RIGHT ATTITUDE

Every day that you wake up you can choose what attitude that you will have for the day. Your mind is a very powerful force if you use it correctly. Obviously, the right attitude to expect the best in your life is a positive attitude. But I want to be very clear that the kind of positive attitude I describe is not one that is contrived or falsely manufactured to impress or manipulate others. The positive attitude I talk about is one that you are filled with. Every morning when you wake up you can choose what attitude that you will have for the day. In my current business owning and running Ashleys Island House I have to have a positive attitude every day or my guests will not come back. It was the same when I managed salespeople and other employees at dealerships. If my attitude was bad it would rub off on the team. Now I can understand that throughout the day things can happen that can mess with your positive attitude. In my life that has happened a lot. That is why the ringtone on my phone is a duck. Why a duck you ask? Well when a duck gets wet it just flaps its wing and shakes the water away. Just like me. If something tries to derail my positive attitude I just move forward and think positive. I am determined not to let something or someone ruin my day. So be a duck for a day. I think you will be surprised how good you feel. Quack Quack

Have a Great week everybody and I hope to see you on Put in Bay. The summer is going fast. Do not let it pass without you making a few more trips to my happy place.
