You can find Captain Alfred Parker Park on the west side of South Bass Island, near the corner of DuPont Avenue and West Shore Boulevard. This park is right next to the famous Shiphouse. Furthermore, it’s about a 30-minute walk from downtown Put-in-Bay or a 5 minute ride with a golf cart, making it a great place to visit during your day of exploring.

Alfred Parker’s life was a testament to hard work, perseverance, and dedication to the Put-in-Bay community.
From Grape Farms to the Open Waters
- Born in 1910 on a South Bass Island grape farm, Parker’s early years were shaped by vineyard work and fishing trips to Starve Island.
- Left school after eighth grade to support his family, working at Rittman’s Market before joining Miller Boat Livery.
Navigating Challenges & Building a Legacy
- Became a skilled skipper, working for Newman Boat Line and later the Erie Isle Ferry Company.
- Founded Parker Boat Line, introducing Lake Erie’s first 100-foot ferry.
- Served as a township trustee for 32 years, mentoring and uplifting his community.
A Lasting Tribute
The island honors Parker’s legacy by allowing a park to bear his name. His epitaph reflects his deep love for the lake:

Green Island is now a wildlife refuge and is not open to the public, but its history is fascinating. A lighthouse once stood on Green Island, built in 1855. The original lighthouse burned down in 1863, and its replacement lasted until 1939. Today, a tall skeletal tower, operated by the Coast Guard, is all that remains.
Love Locks and Water Fun
A chain-link fence runs along the edge of the bluff, keeping visitors safe. Over the years, people have added love locks to the fence, creating a sweet display of love and memories. While kayaking or exploring the area, be sure to check out the Benson Ford Shiphouse, one of the island’s most unique sights. This ship was once used to carry iron ore across the Great Lakes. In 1986, it was moved to South Bass Island and turned into a home. The shiphouse now features a big family room, five bedrooms, and even the original pilot house, which offers stunning views of the sunset. It’s open for tours and is a must-see for visitors to the island.
