Downtown Dave’s Live Music Preview (6/27-7/7)

putinbay.com is happy to welcome back Downtown Dave! A short column by Dave Schafer, owner of Ashley’s Island House and friend of the site, Downtown Dave will share this week’s live music schedule at the Bay, as well as his thoughts on what’s what at PIB!

Downtown Dave is going to make you want to come to the Bay this weekend. Here’s where we think you should stay!

Next Two Weekend’s Live Music At The Bay!

So this is going to a change up this weeks Downtown Dave post. I am going to make a few comments but then I am going to make comments in each bar section about the bands performing at each venue. Now each band or artist that I comment about I have personally seen play. I also have many videos posted on many live performances on my personal facebook page. The whole reason that I started to come to Put in Bay was the different live music that I could listen to on a given day.

July 6 Christian Lombardo 12:00 Ben Beallas 4:00 Casper 7:30 Adubb 11:00

So I have already many comments about Casper. He is probably one of the most talented solo artists on Put in Bay. In the many times that I have seen him there is not a request that he will not attempt.
The Ladies Night band name is what they play

Round House

June 27 Mad Dog 2:00 Fizz Ed 8:30

July 5 Mad Dog 2:00 Paul Franks 6:30 Killer Flamingos 9:30
July 6 Screaming Heathens Duo 2:00 High Five Swan Dive 8:30

Okay so I am somewhat bias about the Roundhouse. I post most of my videos from there but I do go everywhere. That is why I got asked to do this weekly post.
If you have not seen Mad Dog you have to. He has played on that stage for over 40 years and still draws a big crowd whenever he plays.
Killer Flamingos are out of Detroit and are also a band that has played at the Roundhouse for a very long time. They play all of the great up tempo songs that you love to dance to.
The Sellouts are out of Cleveland and play many Wednesdays on the Roundhouse stage. Great 80s and 90 Rock and Roll

Boathouse

July 5 Love is War 12:00 Tony Schultz 4:00 Velcro Pygmies 9:00

Well Trailer Park Ninjas and the Velcro Pygmies are bands that play all over the Eastern US. From Key West, Nashville, Alabama and many places in between. Pygmies and all of the hair band songs from the 80s and 90s. Definitely a must see.

July 5 Allie 2:00 Kyle Smithers 6:00 Tobi Lee and Mustang Sally 9:30

Okay you can see the entertainment is consistent. There is a reason why. They are all good. Allie lives on the island and plays at 3 different places. She is in demand and loves playing and has a loyal following. The Fulco Brothers are from Tampa Florida. They are a dad and his 3 sons. From Billy Joel, Elton John to Ozzy Osbourne they paly it all and also todays hits. They do not have I pads or background music they know all the songs. Now Tobi Lee and Mustang Sally. Tobi is doing over 100 solo shows this year on Put in Bay. This is one of the few times she will have her full band here on Put in Bay. They are also a must see.

Reel Bar

July 4 Ray Fogg 3:00
July 5 Nick Brownell 2:00 Ray Fogg 7:30
July 6 Nick Brownell 2:00 Bob Gatewood 7:30

Nick is here a lot in July. His main place he plays is Key West. You do not play there unless you are real good. Now Bob Gatewood, Not only is he a good friend he is a great musician. Solo he makes it sound like a full band and with Calabash during the week puts on a great show. Plus he has some great original music that he plays. Plus the official island song about Put in Bay called Friends of the Bay. Ray Fogg, I have seen him play for over 20 years. He will play all of your favorite sing alongs plus a few of his originals. Definitely has many jokes and stories that are always funny. Can be sometimes R Rated so if you can not take a joke do not go. But I suggest make sure you see him perform.

Pat Shepard has been playing at Frostys for as long as I can remember. Lots of great music to just sit back and relax to while eating a Frostys Pizza

Downtown Dave’s Thought(s) For The Week

Lets cover a few comments that I hear about the Put in Bay.
Is it expensive to drink on the island. Well try going to Nashville and pay $11 for a beer. You can find draft beer for $5 and 16 ounce beers in cans for $7
Food is expensive. There are many places that you can get a burger and fries pretty close to the price of a Big Mac. And at least the fries are edible. Plus many places that you can dine at have live music to listen to while you eat.
You have to pay to park a golf cart. Well I do not think you can find a parking spot in any resort town in the USA that you do not have to pay for parking. Try parking downtown Cleveland. It will cost you in most places $40, that would buy you 10 hours of parking in Put in Bay. Plus paid parking has made the island safer. With the money collected and put into the city budget we now have 8 fulltime police officers to make sure your time spent on the island is as safe as possible.

This is my most fun weekend of the year. The annual Pirates Fest weekend. Dress up in your favorite pirate gear and enjoy your weekend. I know I will be dressed up.

Now I almost forgot The Brewery has Karaoke every Friday and Saturday night starting at 10:00 and right across the street from them is a piano bar. So if you don’t like any of the music on the island sing your own songs or sing your request with the piano player.

Last thing. I do my best to give everybody a schedule of what is happening on the island. I am not always 100% correct but this is a time consuming task. Today alone is a 2 hour post. But I enjoy letting everybody what is going on. You are missing so much if you stay home. So I hope to see many of you on the Island soon.
