Downtown Dave’s Live Music Preview (8-1-8-11)

putinbay.com is happy to welcome back Downtown Dave! A short column by Dave Schafer, owner of Ashley’s Island House and friend of the site, Downtown Dave will share this week’s live music schedule at the Bay, as well as his thoughts on what’s what at PIB!

Downtown Dave is going to make you want to come to the Bay this weekend. Here’s where we think you should stay!

Next Two Weekend’s Live Music At The Bay!

So this is going to a change up this weeks Downtown Dave post. I am going to make a few comments but then I am going to make comments in each bar section about the bands performing at each venue. Now each band or artist that I comment about I have personally seen play. I also have many videos posted on many live performances on my personal facebook page. The whole reason that I started to come to Put in Bay was the different live music that I could listen to on a given day.

Every solo performer and band for the next 2 weeks are awesome. I call Wednesdays at the Roundhouse Wrinkle Wednesday. Why, the bands play mostly songs from the 70s,80s and 90s. Most of the crowd has a few wrinkles just like me. Roundhouse calls it Wednesday it is a tradition. They even have shirts that say that.

I have posted videos of all 3 performers playing over the next week on my site and Ashleys site. All of them will take requests. They do not have an exact play list. They tend to play what the crowd wants to hear. Now they all play Free Bird but why does everybody request it? I think it is just because everybody likes to hear somebody request Free Bird. Now it is a great song but I think there are a lot better songs to request. So get your requests ready

He will play all of your favorite sing alongs plus a few of his originals. Definitely has many jokes and stories that are always funny. Can be sometimes R Rated so if you can not take a joke do not go. But I suggest make sure you see him perform.

The Brewery has Karaoke every Friday and Saturday night starting at 10:00 and right across the street from them is a piano bar. So if you don’t like any of the music on the island sing your own songs or sing your request with the piano player. Plus I found out Topsy Turvey has a Jam session every Monday night at 9:00 where many of the local musicians play.  A lot of the solo acts play for tips so please show your love for them

Downtown Dave’s Thought(s) For The Week

So a lot of my thoughts that I write every week are thoughts that I have collected over the years. I then modify them to fit me. This week it is going to be all me. This week is all about me and the decisions that happened this week. I have said many times that I value my friends and guests more than money. Well it was really true last week. I had a guest at Ashleys Island House stay for 1 night. We talked a lot. He took an interest in what I have built up over the last 9 years. He asked me if I would sell it? Well I said if somebody made me a stupid offer I would. About a week later he contacted me and made me an offer. It was more than double what I paid for Ashleys 9 years ago. I told him for a little bit more I might consider selling. I gave him that number and he said it might be worth that in a year or 2 but not right now. So that did not close the door on him being a buyer. I do not think so. I think he sees the value that I have built and he still could be a buyer at a later date. I actually think I could have gotten him up a little bit and the deal could have gotten done. BUT…….I have to think what I do now. Yes I would have a nice profit on Ashleys plus my 401k and stock holding have increased by 35% in the last 18 months. ( I have a great financial Planner if anybody needs one) So I am not rich but I am not poor. As much as I travel and do things I do not spend a lot of money. So my decision was not about the money. If it was, I would have done the deal. It is about what I talk about a lot in my posts every week. It is about my friends. I can have millions in the bank but without my friends I have nothing. Most of you that are reading this are why I decided to not sell at this time. These are my reasons

My guests…You have all become a family to me. I did not want money to come between the stories we share on the front porch

My friends on the island are awesome. I have been to 2 house parties in the last 2 weeks and I have 2 more in the next 2 weeks. If I sold and left the island I would miss each and every one of you. You are the people that make things fun.

Put in Bay…. This is my home and I have decided to run for City Council so I can give back to the island that has given me so much happiness in the last 24 years.

Now I will sell eventually maybe 2 years maybe 5 years or maybe 10 years. But for now I cannot imagine leaving my happy place.

So to everybody Thank You

Remember money doesn’t buy happiness.
