Teams split in Great Lakes Island Basketball Tournament

Even though two teams, Mackinac Island and Washington Island, had to back out of the Great Lakes Island Basketball Tournament held on Friday, December 3rd, and Saturday, December 4th, the two teams that did play, the Beaver Island Islanders and the Put-in-Bay Panthers, excited fans with some entertaining competition.

On Friday night, the Panther girls took an early lead against their Islander counterparts and never relented until the buzzer sounded with a final score of 48 to 22. The Panther’s well-balanced offense was truly enjoyable to watch.

The story was reversed when Panther boys took the floor. Down from the very beginning, they never got even close to the Islanders until the very end of play, but that wasn’t good enough. The Panthers, after scoring 37, couldn’t stop the Lake Michigan Island team that scored 41 points.

The second round of games started on Saturday morning with the boys playing first. Again with the Beaver Island team looking to win its third GLIBT competition, the PIB boys couldn’t catch up and lost 53 to 43.

The Put-in-Bay Girls’ Basketball team was on fire as they captured their 3rd straight trophy by a resounding score of 39-15 against the Beaver Island ladies.

An exciting time was had by all and we’re sure everyone is excited to play again next year.
