Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial Keeps Superintendent

The National Park Service plans on keeping a full-time superintendent and staff at a Lake Erie island landmark monument for 2015 and moving forward.

Ohio Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur says the Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial on South Bass Island will remain a separate unit of the park system.

The park service had been looking at combining the staff overseeing the Perry’s monument site and the River Raisin National Battlefield Park in Monroe, Mich.

The 350-foot tall monument in Ohio honors a key victory in the War of 1812; while River Raisin National Battlefield Park recalls the Battles of the River Raisin that were also a milestone point in that war.

Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry captured a British fleet near the island during the battle that’s remembered for his command: “Don’t Give Up the Ship.
