The Butterfly House at Put-in-Bay

The Butterfly House is truly special. Every visit to Put-in-Bay should include a stop here This peaceful oasis in the midst of Perry’s Cave and Family Fun Center is full of beautiful butterflies, lush greenery, and soothing music.

The Butterfly House Details

Visitors are invited to stroll along gorgeous pathways full of beautiful plants and discover secret passageways. Opened in 2004, this 4000 sq foot aviary houses over 50 species of butterflies from all over the world.

Keep an eye out for the dazzling Mosaic from Central America, the Rose Swallowtail from Southeast Asia, and look extra hard for the Dead Leaf Butterfly from Southwest Asia. The Dead Leaf Butterfly is a beautiful gradient of oranges and blues on the top but looks just like a dead leaf underneath. It often sits motionless in the trees with its “stem” touching the branches. It is almost impossible to spot!

Expand your butterfly knowledge by checking out the butterfly specimens encased in glass. There are so many amazing things to see in both the aviary and gift shop. The gift shop is chock full of delightful items. This includes gifts for the garden, jewelry, and crystal butterfly figurines. Kids can choose from fun and educational gifts galore. They also sell plenty of Put-in-Bay souvenirs.

Perry’s Cave and Family Fun Center

Perry’s Cave and Family Fun Center is located on Catawba Avenue about a fifteen minute walk from downtown Put-in-Bay. This is definitely the epicenter of all family fun on the island. It is open every day during the season and includes special pricing for groups and tours as well as packages to make seeing all their attractions affordable.

The whole complex is built around Perry’s Cave, an ecological marvel. This limestone cave was said to provide water to Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s troops during the Battle of Lake Erie. Commodore Perry is credited for the discovery of the cave in 1813.

The underground cave is quite rare and its levels rise and fall with the tides of Lake Erie. While it hasn’t been officially discovered, there is thought to be a subterranean connection between the lake and the cave. Guided tours last between 15-20 minutes.

It is easy to spend an entire day here. DanDee’s provides plenty of yummy food for sustenance to keep going and having fun. There are also other dining options nearby including Goat Soup and Whiskey and Joe’s Bar.
