The Beer Barrel Saloon History

On the early afternoon of May 27, 1988, a devastating fire ripped through the prized Colonial Building. Within 45 minutes, this historic building was reduced to mere rubble. The Colonial Housed many different businesses throughout the years including a dance hall and skating rink.

Tragically enough, the first two buildings located at this site burned down prior to the event in the 80’s. The Put-in-Bay House burned in 1878 primarily due to the lack of a fire station on the island and then again in 1907.

The Colonial House was then built by Valentine Doller and survived for many years. After the depression the Lonz family, of the Lonz Winery on Middle Bass Island purchased the building. This striking building was owned and managed by a variety of Put-in-Bay luminaries until that fateful day in 1988.

A great loss to the region, the Beer Barrel Saloon looks to memorialize all the great memories of the Colonial in the wonderful atmosphere and joyful music that plays throughout the summers.
