Downtown Dave’s Live Music Preview (7/17-7/27)

putinbay.com is happy to welcome back Downtown Dave! A short column by Dave Schafer, owner of Ashley’s Island House and friend of the site, Downtown Dave will share this week’s live music schedule at the Bay, as well as his thoughts on what’s what at PIB!

Downtown Dave is going to make you want to come to the Bay this weekend. Here’s where we think you should stay!

Next Two Weekend’s Live Music At The Bay!

So this is going to a change up this weeks Downtown Dave post. I am going to make a few comments but then I am going to make comments in each bar section about the bands performing at each venue. Now each band or artist that I comment about I have personally seen play. I also have many videos posted on many live performances on my personal facebook page. The whole reason that I started to come to Put in Bay was the different live music that I could listen to on a given day.

If you have not seen Mad Dog you have to. He has played on that stage for over 40 years and still draws a big crowd whenever he plays. Well let’s talk about Calabash for a second. They have been playing on this island for over 30 years. Lead singer is Bob Gatewood. I think he plays 5 days a week all summer. I have no idea how at his age he keeps it up. But I will say this he is entertaining.Boathouse

Okay you can see the entertainment is consistent. The Fulco Brothers are from Tampa Florida. They are a dad and his 3 sons. From Billy Joel, Elton John to Ozzy Osbourne they play it all and also today’s hits. They do not have I pads or background music; they know all the songs. I have been told that I need to see Kyle. I did see him last week and he is awesome. He does a lot of Pat Dailey songs.

Nick is here a lot in July. His main place he plays is Key West. You do not play there unless you are really good. I did stop in and saw Nick play last weekend. The place was packed and he was outstanding. Please go and see him. Now Bob Gatewood, Not only is he a good friend he is a great musician. Solo he makes it sound like a full band. Plus he has some great original music that he plays. Plus the official island song about Put in Bay called Friends of the Bay. Ray Fogg, I have seen him play for over 20 years. He will play all of your favorite sing alongs plus a few of his originals. Definitely has many jokes and stories that are always funny. Can be sometimes R Rated so if you can not take a joke do not go. But I suggest make sure you see him perform.

Rest of the Island

The Brewery has Karaoke every Friday and Saturday night starting at 10:00 and right across the street from them is a piano bar. So if you don’t like any of the music on the island sing your own songs or sing your request with the piano player. Plus I found out Topsy Turvey has a Jam session every Monday night at 9:00 where many of the local musicians play.  A lot of the solo acts play for tips so please show your love for them

Downtown Dave’s Thought(s) For The Week

Another awesome week on Put in Bay.

So I say that I am retired but really I am not. Running a 13 room bed and breakfast is a lot of work. But I would not trade it for anything because I am my own boss. Plus at any time I could sell but then what would I do? I can hire helpers (I have one a few days a week and without her I would be lost). But maybe I should hire more. Maybe I should slow down. It is difficult because it is my name on the business. Before I retired I worked my job like it was my name on the business. I worked long hours but I was always the best in what I did. Nobody could ever say that I was out worked. Right now I am in the middle of my season and I do not have enough hours in the day to get everything done. Plus on the island I am super involved in the community, that takes time also. But in 2 months things slow down a bit but then comes tailgate season and football games. Maybe I know why I did 5 cruises last year. I needed rest and relaxation that is why I cruised. Well I am not going to slow down. I am going to keep on pushing, playing and enjoying every day till I can not do it anymore. So I have learned a lot so far in my lifetime. Let me share a few of them with you.

  • It takes years to build trust and only seconds to destroy it
  • You can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for the rest of your life
  • 2 people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different
  • Credentials on the wall does not make you a decent human being
  • Just because someone does not love you the way you want them to does not mean they do not love you with all they have.
  • No matter how good a friend is,they are going to hurt you every so often and you must forgive them for that
  • Your family will not always be there for you. Families are relatives that you do not choose. Sometimes they are so different. But you can choose good friends that will always be there for you
  • Our background and circumstances may influence who we are but we are responsible for who we become
  • You should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them
  • You can keep going long after you think you cannot.( that is me today LOL)
  • Money is a lousy way of keeping score
  • Either you control your attitude or it controls you
  • It is not what you have in your life but who you have in your life that counts.

I am so happy that I have all of my post readers and friends in my life. Without all of you my life would be empty
