A beloved fixture of downtown Put-in-Bay, Kimberly’s Carousel has delighted visitors to the island since 1917. Constructed by Allan Herschell, this vintage carousel looks much the same as it did 100 years ago.
Brightly colored animals spin around the cheery red and white striped top. One of the few remaining carousels of its kind in the United States, kids and adults alike flock to this island institution. Take a ride on a chicken, pig, or Pete the Perch, the island favorite. Joyous music spills onto the streets as the ride goes ‘round.
The History of Kimberly’s Carousel
The Allan Herschell Company was the most prolific manufacturer of carousels and other amusement park rides. They specialized in portable machines for traveling carnivals. The company produced over 3,000 hand carved wooden carousel in the early years of the 20th century. They were known far and wide for their gorgeous, expertly crafted carousel horses.
Over time, the carousel fell into disrepair. The Put-in-Bay luminary, George Stoiber took it upon himself to save this important island fixture. He purchased in the 1980’s and worked alongside his wife June to renovate the entire ride and return it to its former glory.
Of the 36 original horse, only 12 remained intact with most of the paint vanished from the surface. The couple added new animals, including Petey the Perch and June personally painted most of the new animals. A true labor of the love, the couple understood that Kimberly’s Carousel is such an important part of Put-in-Bay history.
