The History of Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church

By the mid-1800’s, Put-in-Bay was home to more and more permanent residents. After the War of 1812, this region starting attracting more and more interest thanks in part to its beautiful setting and prime wine-making conditions. Figures like Jose deRivera were instrumental in setting the course for the Put-in-Bay we know today.

In 1866 a story run in the Sandusky Daily Commercial Register detailing the growth of the island. With vineyards the main source of income for islanders and its grand reputation as an ideal vacation spot, the economic stability of the island looked good.

By 1876, a local government was needed. The three islands, Middle, South, and Gibraltar, organized into a township with Put-in-Bay incorporated as the village into this area.

With all these changes came the need for place of worship and a parish community. The Catholic residents began offering mass in their island homes. A small church was erected in 1876. It soon became apparent a larger church was necessary, for both locals and the increased summer visitors. By 1929, Put-in-Bay has its very own Catholic church built and ready for use.

The beautiful stone church features an impressive rose window which illuminates the sanctuary on Sunday mornings. The grounds also include the sanctuary and parish with a beautiful lawn to welcome worshippers.
